Sync methods – which one to choose

IT Glue supports integrating between multiple data sources. This article will help you understand the 4 different methods of integrating RMM and PSA tools.

Choosing a sync method

Make sure that you read through each of the steps below that apply to the method you've decided on before importing and syncing data from external sources.

If you're using a supported PSA tool, we recommend that you connect your PSA to IT Glue first. With PSA syncing set up, your organizations, locations, and contacts will appear without any extra effort on your part. You can also sync configurations from your PSA with minimal effort.

If you choose to add an RMM, IT Glue will try to discover data in your RMM and match it to any existing IT Glue data, which includes PSA data. For RMM organizations and configurations to be automatically matched, the organization names and the device serial numbers or MAC addresses must match. For more on RMM integrations and the caveats with respect to RMM imported data, take a look at our About RMM configuration integrations article. For the detailed matching logic, see the integration articles that we created for each RMM.

There are 4 sync methods available to choose from:

Method Description
PSA only, no RMM
(option A)
  • Configurations, organizations, contacts, and locations* are written to your IT Glue account by choosing a one-way or two-way PSA sync.
  • Any future updates to editable fields will sync between your PSA and IT Glue.
  • Your data will sync without extra effort on your part, but you do not get all technical fields that are available from your RMM, such as CPU, memory, and last reboot.
  • Data sources used: 1.
PSA and RMM for a combined view of configuration data
(option B)
  • Configuration data is automatically written to your IT Glue account via your PSA.
  • Updated RMM configuration data will then be overlaid on data that's written to your account.
  • Any future manual updates to editable fields will sync between your PSA and IT Glue.
  • Data sources used: 2.
  • Recommended sync method.

PSA, syncing only organizations, contacts, locations
RMM, syncing only configurations, locations
(option C)

  • Configuration data is written to your IT Glue account by choosing to import data from your RMM, by entering data directly in IT Glue, or by importing data from secondary sources.
  • Updated RMM configuration data will then be overlaid on data that's written to your account.
  • Because the configurations in IT Glue are not syncing with your PSA, any future manual updates to configuration data will not sync between your PSA and IT Glue.
  • Data sources used: 2.
RMM only, no PSA
(option D)
  • Configuration data is written to your IT Glue account by choosing to import data from your RMM, by entering data directly in IT Glue, or by importing data from secondary sources.
  • Updated RMM configuration data will then be overlaid on data that's written to your account.
  • Data sources used: 1.

NOTE  Two-way PSA syncing is currently only available for ConnectWise, Autotask, Kaseya BMS, and Pulseway PSA. Also note that configuration sync is not available for Tigerpaw integrations.

Process for integrating

A. PSA only

  1. Integrate your RMM with your PSA tool.
  2. Push all RMM data to your PSA.
  3. Add your PSA integration to IT Glue.
  4. Make sure that you enable the relevant options on the sync settings screen (e.g. Managed Servers, Managed Workstations).
  5. Wait for the full PSA sync to complete. Data will be written to your account according to the enabled options in your sync settings.

NOTE  For the field mapping and other details, see the integration articles that we created for each PSA.

If a one-way PSA sync is chosen, IT Glue will not update your PSA.

B. PSA and RMM (recommended)

  1. Integrate your RMM with your PSA tool.
  2. Push all RMM data to your PSA.
  3. Add your PSA integration to IT Glue.
  4. Select the configuration types you'd like to sync with IT Glue.
  5. Wait for the full PSA sync to complete. Data will be written to your account according to the enabled options in your sync settings.
  6. Add your RMM integration to IT Glue.
  7. Wait for the full RMM sync to complete.
  8. From the matching screens, manually action unmatched organizations and configurations. Most of this information should be matched automatically.

NOTE  For the matching logic and other details, see the integration articles that we created for each RMM.

IMPORTANT  Warning. With this sync method, don't use the RMM matching screens to create new organizations or configurations in IT Glue because you'll automatically get the same RMM data from a PSA sync. This should allow everything to match automatically and it avoids duplicates.

If a one-way PSA sync is chosen, IT Glue will not update your PSA.

C. PSA and RMM - without PSA configurations

This process is similar to the RMM only method because you're relying on the RMM to provide configuration data, but with the benefit of having your PSA synced organizations, locations, and contacts appear without any extra effort on your part.

  1. Add your PSA integration to IT Glue but do not enable any Configuration Types in the sync settings.

NOTE  If you have configurations in IT Glue syncing from your PSA, now is a good time to disconnect them and disable the PSA configuration sync for Managed Servers, Managed Workstations, etc. If you're at all unsure, speak with us before completing this process.

  2. Wait for the full PSA sync to complete. Data will be written to your account according to the enabled options in your sync settings.
  3. Add your RMM integration to IT Glue.
  4. Wait for the full RMM sync to complete.
  5. From the matching screens, manually action (match, ignore, create) unmatched organizations and configurations.

NOTE  For the matching logic and other details, see the integration articles that we created for each RMM.

IMPORTANT  Warning. With this sync method, you shouldn't use the RMM matching screens to create new organizations in IT Glue because you'll automatically get this information from a PSA sync. Otherwise, it could create a duplicate.

If a one-way PSA sync is chosen, IT Glue will not update your PSA.

D. RMM only

  1. (Optional) Import any relevant data from Network Detective or spreadsheets (.csv files containing organizations, locations, contacts, and configurations).
  2. Select your RMM to integrate it with IT Glue.
  • If you're currently integrated with a PSA, disconnect your PSA before connecting your RMM. You'll usually want to keep all of the data imported from your PSA, but if you're at all unsure, speak with us before completing this process.
  • Wait for the full RMM sync to complete.
  • From the matching screens, manually action (match, ignore, create) unmatched organizations and configurations.

NOTE  For the matching logic and other details, see the integration articles that we created for each RMM.
